Fifteen years later after the rebel uprising and through the EZLN, the world came to know the modern mayan dwellings of the  Zapatistas Villages.  Directed by Subcommandante Marcos, they have been working on creating a new social narrative.

The film, "In the Heart of Time" allows a glimpse into that world...to see the people, the struggle for what it is,  it travels into the heart of autonomous village, and reveals that the rural and indigenous life in the mountains in the southeastern parts of México are changing.

"Sonia (Rocio Barrios) is engaged to be married: Her dowry is a cow. Out walking in the jungle, she exchanges a sultry glance with guitar-playing Zapatista rebel Julio (Francisco Jimenez). Such a relationship reps a security threat to both the community and the rebels and is thus forbidden.

Meanwhile, the men struggle to bring electricity to this isolated jungle region as the women fight against the encroachment of government forces. Sonia's grandmother Zoraida (Dona Aurelia) lectures the girl on traditional virtues and the necessity of sacrifice, but Sonia has come to the conclusion that such sacrifice is not for her."

Religare: Artists explore the concept of Religion

"Religare":  according to Tom Harpur and Joseph Campbell the word Religion derives from the Latin word "ligare" which means "bind, connect", and combined with the prefix "re"= re-ligare, i.e. re (again) + ligare or "to reconnect".

For this art exhibit, artists will create work that analizes and critiques the concept of religion.

The exhibit takes place at Antena in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood from August 6-September 4, 2010 with the art opening taking place on Friday August 6th from 6pm-10pm.

Liminality describes the nature of being “in-between”; neither here nor there – or perhaps here and there. This exhibition explores the nature of liminality though examining work from the virtual world, Second Life, and its dialogues with issues of physicality via an exhibition at Antena Gallery, Chicago and on I Am Columbia Island in Second Life. The show will include objects, mixed reality performance, video, print and virtual installation in either physical, virtual or mixed-reality forms. What is the nature of art when it emerges in virtual worlds, and what happens when it attempts to emerge into physicality, and vice versa? What is the nature of presence in virtual art? How does it make us feel? This is the aim of this exhibition.

Jessica Westbrook is an interdisciplinary artist and designer working with photography, graphics, animation, interactivity, video, sound, and installation. Her modular projects explore desire, visual cues, cultural artifacts, and contradictory sensations that vacillate between great fortune and impending catastrophe. Currently Westbrook is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she co-developed a new photography and video program in 2008, and holds a dual role teaching in both the Photo/Media Art and Graphic/Interactive Design concentrations. Westbrook has exhibited her projects nationally and internationally, including recent and upcoming exhibitions at Axiom Center for New and Experimental Media (Boston), The Grey Market (NYC), the Lab (San Francisco), and the Experimental Media Series at the Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian (DC). Her photography is represented by GalleryELL, Brooklyn, NY. Westbrook received her MFA in photography from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia in 1998. 

Adam Trowbridge makes work exploring the aesthetic possibilities that arise as communication breaks down. Using new media and popular culture in a practice at the intersection of linguistics and sensational aesthetics, he invents incidents and simulations that occur slightly above the noise level, between words that organize our communities and the chaos that lies beyond them. While his practice involves a range of tactics, including responsive sculpture, installation, single-channel video, text, theater, performance and conceptual work, it is grounded in a cinematic approach and the techniques of postproduction: remixing, cutting and pasting, splicing, cut-ups, and fold-ins. Interactivity, simulation, responsive sculpture and autonomous agents offer ways of introducing structured chaos that unfolds even after works are installed. Trowbridge recently presented “Limited Set: Generative Intersections of Theater and Artificial Life” as part of the CAA New Media Caucus panels in Chicago 2010, had his work published by “Publishing Genius,” and has been selected for inclusion in the Java Museum. Trowbridge received his MFA in Electronic Visualization from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 2009.

Trowbridge and Westbrook work together and in collaboration with other artists and groups. In 2005 they established the artist collective SEED and began curating exhibitions and video events. In 2007 they began working with TEH, an artist group making work involving simulation and immersive technologies in site sensitive installation. In 2009 they began working with Basekamp (Philadelphia), collaboratively developing college level curriculum as an extension of the year long Plausible Art Worlds program.

SENORA INDEPENDENCIA

In honor of Women's Month and the Bicentennial of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain, Carlos Theatre Productions is proud to bring the celebrated Mexican actress, Zaide Silvia Gutierrez, who is probably best know for her role as Rosa in the film, "El Norte", by Gregory Nava, which was nominated for an Oscar in 1993.

This dramatized reading, which will be presented in Spanish, is based on the life of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, who played a pivotal role by warning Father Miguel Hidalgo that the Spaniards had learned of the independence conspiracy.
Father Hidalgo then gave the Cry of Freedom, celebrated to this day as, "El Grito de Independencia", and the war began in 1810.

SENORA INDEPENDENCIA is authored by Gilda Salinas. Co-directors are: Maria Muro from Mexico, and Patricia Carlos from Chicago. Local actors include: Lauro Lopez, Roma Diaz, and Alfonso Seiva. Scenography by Esperanza Gama.

Carlos Theatre Productions, under the direction of Patricia Carlos, has brought theater from Mexico for many years featuring the finest actors from Mexico.
